The true story of the first openly gay politician, San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk, has finally been made into a film. The trailer for the film, simply titled “Milk,” is now out, below, and the movie looks pretty good. Sean Penn does an amazing job channeling Milk, while “No Country For Old Men” star Josh Brolin looks eerily like Dan White, the man who assassinated Milk along with city Mayor George Moscone in 1978. White was the man who originated the now infamous “Twinkie Defense,” in which his lawyers claimed that he had a psychotic break after eating too much junk food. White was convicted of manslaughter instead of murder- many believe it was because Harvey Milk was a gay man and the jurors sympathized with White. The verdict resulted in outrage among San Francisco’s gay community. White spent five years in prison, and committed suicide shortly after his release.
Here is the first video look at Gus Van Sant’s “Milk.” The film tells the story of California’s first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk (played by Sean Penn), a San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated. Out this November, it costars James Franco, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsh and Diego Luna.

Early buzz about the film is positive, with praise being heaped on Penn and on co-star James Franco, who portrays Milk’s long-suffering partner Scott, who eventually committed suicide. Quite a different role from his hippie stoner dude in “Pineapple Express.” There’s already talk of Oscar nominations for Penn and director Gus Van Sant.
seems like a great film
